  • On Art and Never Arriving

Prompted by a chat with artist Sean Simmans last night, I got to thinking that it is impossible to ever fully arrive in the arts field.

You may be doing poorly or extremely well on the scale of subjective success, but wherever you are is only temporary and never stable.

Any art form is about finding one’s voice, which is different at 30 than it is at 50 than it is at 70. Your style will constantly change, sometimes–and ideally–for the better, but also sometimes not.

Unfortunately, we have been sold this packaged idea of what success looks like in the art field, genres ripping apart the industry, and marketing madness brainwashing us into what we’re supposed to think art looks like . . . but it’s never accurate.

Ultimately, art is living and fluid and is like water, always flowing, not a dam in sight.

Your work might be polished, but even in a polished state, it’s incomplete because there is always that one thing you could have done better or a little bit smarter.

Art isn’t prefect. It’s not supposed to be. Then it isn’t art. That’s Sean talking and I agree with him.

Whatever your craft, where you are is where you are. If the art is made, you’re an artist. And, in that context, you have arrived . . . but our work never will.

    It’s all about the journey.

  • Project Jackass Title Revealed: Fredrikus

    Fredrikus head shot

    Project Jackass Title Revealed: Fredrikus.

A while back on Patreon, I gave my patrons a patron-first announcement (a perk to being a patron), which was the reveal of the true title of Project Jackass.

Project Jackass was the placeholder title for an upcoming comic strip series from me called Fredrikus.

Fredrikus is that dog you see on the cover of Canister X Comix or throughout my Inktober 2019 sketches. Fred the Dog was a character I created during my time in animation school way back when animation was done on stone tablets that you’d throw past a guy at rapid succession to create the illusion of motion. (Har har.)

Fredrikus is structured as episodic strips, ranging between a single-panel gag and a couple comic pages, and is a mix of humor, heart, and a little bit of social justice with a dose of cynicism.

The plan is for the strips to be collected at some point in comic book format for collectors.

As for how this thing will be published–as in the business model–we’re looking at making it a webcomic (with the aforementioned print version once enough–or close to enough–have aired). The goal of the comic is to simply create an anything-goes comic playground where I can noodle with ideas and styles and experiment with the medium. There’s a general overarching plot to the whole thing, but readers can jump in at any point and will have no trouble piecing it together.

I’ll reveal more of the premise at a different time, but if you like dystopian sci-fi with some of the monster and superhero stuff I normally do, you’ll dig this.

Release is still a ways off, but plenty of strips are written along with some fun side material, and the drawing phase is about half complete in regards to where I want to be before launch.

    Stay tuned . . .

    Status Report – 041420:

Enjoying the new workflow, which follows my new system of Slowing Down to Speed Up.

We are almost where we need to be to discuss Project Jackass here on the blog.

Also, this was blog was retooled behind the scenes recently. A couple minor tweaks left–basically settling on one or two other plug-ins–but otherwise we seem to be back up and running smoothly here.

    Websites are fun.

Right, don’t blog about blogging. That’s Old Internet.

Had a health lapse recently but seem to be getting back on track. (Non-COVID related.) This is good.

Back to the drawing board. Consider this notice one that says, “Yes, we are still working here and almost have news.”

In the interim, please check out my YouTube channel and consider subscribing. Heroes and monsters are what the videos are all about.

  • Various Bits from the Net – 041220

Welcome to Various Bits from the Net – 041220.

Let’s see what we’ve come across this time. Last segment is here.

If you’re a fan of Dave Sim and Gerhard of Cerebus fame, Dave does a weekly update on YouTube telling readers what’s going on at his end and what new Cerebus in Hell? issue is coming out (of which they do parody music videos for). Here is my favorite promo:

    https://youtu.be/ZXYMMVoV2zY

You can visit the Cerebus channel on YouTube by going here.

We’re watching Outlander on Netflix. They are based on the books by Diana Gabaldon. It’s enjoyable and encompasses an era I’d have no trouble living in. Here is the trailer:

    https://youtu.be/PFFKjptRr7Y

In on-line tool news, here is a website that capitalizes your titles/headlines for you in whatever style you select. However, I also encourage you to see how it’s done in the interest of education.

Here is a link to Max West’s Twitter account for his webcomic debuting in June called Poison Ivy Gulch. This is the link to the website proper.

And thus concludes this edition of Various Bits from the Net for 041220.

Stay safe. Eat right. Sleep right.

    April 10 2020 calendar

    Status Report – 041020:

Busy making comics. I also need to block out a chunk of time to go over some scheduling items because in the near future, Gigantigator Death Machine wraps on Patreon and we start up the new serial novel. The end of The Long Year Five of The Canister X Transmission is also not far off so I need to double check my numbering to make sure we end on the right issue (which will be a double so don’t miss out on that).

Project Rebuild hit another delay due to elements beyond my control so I need to wrestle that down because frustration is starting to set in. (Remember when this used to be a simple process?)

And today is Good Friday, the day we remember when God intervened on humankind’s behalf to reunite us with Him, and a day marked out as a turning point in history.

Hope you have a good day.

    Stay safe.

If you need to get in touch, please send me an email. Thanks.

  • FanQuest 2020 Postponed

    FanQuest Logo

This notice is to inform you that FanQuest 2020 has been postponed due to coronavirus concerns as the City of Winnipeg has suspended all festival and event permits until the end of June. Some suggestions are being batted around on FanQuest‘s end regarding either a make-up date or skipping this year or something else. When I know more, I will keep everyone posted.

Apologies for any inconvenience. Hopefully FanQuest 2020 will still happen somehow.

The Convention and Book Signing Schedule page on this site has been updated.

Ps. Today, the latest chapter of Gigantigator Death Machine hit Patreon! In this episode, Dave finds himself in the water. Most of the book is now uploaded. Read this latest chapter and the archives for just a buck by joining my Patreon journey here. Thank you in advance for your support.

    Snow is melting in April

    Status Report – 040820:

As we make headway into Project Jackass, other things need tending to, some items being personal due to COVID-19 and how it’s affected the world. Today will be spent making comics and doing some of those personal things.

This blog was also retooled on the back end so your experience with it should be a better one compared to before. Might be a tweak or two to go yet, however, but generally speaking, this thing seems to be working just fine now. Finally.

    And onward we go.

This has been your Status Report for 040820.

Ps. Hey, look at that picture. The snow is almost melted.

Pps. Here is my Ello account because, well, why not? I don’t use it much but we can hook up there if you’re a part of the site.

    Status Report – 040720:

The comics-making machine is in process and I’m making pages for Project Jackass. Like I said in my newsletter, I’ll talk about it more once I’m further in. I’m about 1/5 of the way and I want to be at about 1/2 before revealing the title. (However, the title was already revealed on Patreon awhile back as a patrons-first announcement; a perk to being a patron.)

Having a good time at the drawing board and working with pencil and inks and paper. It’s a pleasant change from looking at a screen.

If you need me or have a question, please shoot me an email. Thanks.

Stay safe out there. Be smart. Watch out for each other.
