    Status Report – 083123:

Man, it’s been awhile since I’ve done one of these. The last one was this entry.

Lots of web work being done these days. During my hiatus, my sites, my social networks, my books–everything got left behind and now, behind the scenes, needs some sprucing up. Most of it is metadata work and I’ve also been spending some of my time picking at a secret fun project that I hope to reveal soon. In fact, though I haven’t officially announced it, there is a link to it on this site.

    Can you find it?

So, yeah, throw in the day job and I’ve been pulling 12-hour days since August 8th. Worth it though. Needs to be done for a variety of reasons.

YouTube is my big thing right now. Lots of content going up, mostly on a daily basis. Shorts and reels, long videos and podcasts. Plenty going on at the REALM OF HEROES AND MONSTERS on YouTube.

I hope to do more interviews this fall and into next year. I had a blast on Travis Bruce’s YouTube channel, which you can watch here. (And be sure to subscribe to both our channels. It’s Nerd City!)

On a serious note, I’ve been getting my thoughts together on doing a in-depth vLog on anxiety. It’ll be for adults only as I don’t want a kid (or even teen) stumbling across it because it will tell the hard truth about anxiety and its various treatments and I don’t want that info entering ears that might not be ready for it. In other words, I don’t want to scare a young person. But anxiety occurs at various degrees so some might not find it frightening, but others might, depending where they’re at. Even some adults might get triggered so I’m gonna try and remember to announce a little disclaimer at the beginning to avoid that.

Anyway, the vacation I took at the beginning of the month did me wonders. It was a good reset and recharge for getting back to real life. Bittersweet that it’s over; almost like a dream. I’m hoping for a break at Christmas so we’ll see what happens.

By now you’re probably sick of hotwheels videos. C’mon. It’s the batmobile. The coolest car around. Anyway, one more to air then I’m outta cars to show. Need to find one more so I can put together a third volume compilation of hotwheels shorts. Volume 2 is set to air Monday.

Regarding FREDRIKUS, I have one more strip done. I thought it was colored but when I went to look into it, I learned that the page is done and scanned but that’s as far as it is. Next step is to enhance the scan so the blank ink is nice and sharp then color it. I think that’ll be a weekend task and then I’ll air it for you.

Well, time to go. Work to be done.

    Cheers.

This has been your Status Report for 083123.

vLog - 2023 studio tour thumbnail

Well, here it is: Home sweet home.

It’s definitely not like other writers’ offices with books everywhere and a computer. It’s also not like your traditional artist studio with the smell of paint on the air and lots of brushes and pens laid out.

When I say in my newsletter I work in a bunker, well, you’ll see that I’m not far off.

My studio was originally going to be a basement bathroom but the previous owners of the house didn’t finish it. They got as far as framing it and marking out on the cement floor what goes where (i.e. the tub here, the toilet there, etc). So, I went out and got a roll of carpet, cut it to size, put it down, then put all my equipment where I wanted it to be. What I forgot to mention in the video is the computer desk I’m using I’ve had since I was about 5 or 6. It’s small, but I’ve made it work and the room is too small to put in something new from IKEA or wherever. Besides, one of the drawers has a sticker on it one of my kids put on it when they were toddlers. Yeah, I’m sentimental like that.

Anyway, this is it, the A.P. Fuchs 2023 Studio Tour. This is where I produce my books and comics and make sure they get out to you.

Hope you dig my little nerd’s nest.

Welcome to the real-life Realm of Heroes and Monsters!

  • Patreon Future?

I started a Patreon a few years back and stuck with it for quite some time. Unfortunately, it wasn’t financially viable and I had to shut it down. (Too much work for not enough return.) But I’ve been thinking of reviving it in the distant future, the idea being there’s one flat monthly fee and you’ll receive content Monday to Friday. Could be an essay or article, a short story or piece of flash fiction, comics, behind the scenes, a blog post–pretty much anything of interest to the Realm of Heroes and Monsters.

I’ve yet to come up with a business plan for it but this is an idea I’ve had noodling around in my head for quite some time. Hopefully there would be enough interest in the endeavor to make it worth our time together.

We’ll see what the future holds.

  • Blogging Has Lost Its Way

    blogging has lost its way

I discovered this link through Warren Ellis’s blog. As a paraphrase of what it’s about–though I encourage you to read it–it basically says that blogs have now been geared toward getting traffic via catchy headlines and, simply, have become a complete defeat of what blogging was meant to be, which is merely a place for someone to log their thoughts and personal items and create content of interest without getting all gimmicky about it.

The argument put forth over at Ribbon Farm is a compelling one, especially to someone like me who hates the pursuit of money and fame and popularity. (If those things are an honest byproduct of what you do, that’s different. I’m talking about making those things one’s goal(s) as the error).

The idea of writing a blog where, even if it had just an audience of one (me), is tantalizing. I’m very anti-establishment by nature and tend to see the strings in what people are doing (especially in the creative industry). It all comes off as so flimsy and childish. I’m not knocking my fellow creators but am talking straight to whomever this entry here at Canister X and over at Ribbon Farm speaks to. Should a person not be of interest through genuine organic efforts instead of a blatant attempt to sell a product? Shouldn’t who they are be more important than what they make? When did an inorganic object of extremely limited value replace a person whose value is limitless? Something’s not right here.

I’ve always been partial to the random, the underground, the unique. Maybe because those are my roots and are a constant theme in my work (taking an idea and trying something new with it, consequences be damned). There has always been a soft spot in my heart for that guy or girl with an obscure blog from some other part of the world, the kind of blog you read where you don’t know if you’re the only audience member or not.

Capitalist culture would call blogging for no one a wasted effort because it doesn’t–or is unlikely to–yield a financial result.

    This is foolish.

Running a blog isn’t about money despite what the marketers tell you (who want you to visit their blog for information so they can sell you something).

Blogging is about showcasing a life in thought, word, and deed. Blogging is about honesty. It’s about talking to the world about anything that interests you or is on your mind and heart.

I might not have always succeeded, but since I’ve been back after being ill, I’ve made every effort to showcase myself and what I do and talk to you honestly through my blog entries and newsletter. Sometimes you might have enjoyed what you read, other times not. And that’s okay. I’ve been doing this long enough to know I won’t hit a chord with everyone. The magic is in the honesty. The magic lies within you, dear reader, when you commit the simple act of reading regardless of how you feel about what you’re reading. It’s the fact that you did take the time to read the words of a person you only know through a screen. And maybe that’s the secret right there? Taking the time to read the words of a person–a very real person with a physical body and mind and heart and spirit–whom you never met. Like I always say, time is the most valuable thing a person has and its wealth surpasses anything we can compare it to. The fact that a person takes that precious commodity and spends it on you is magic.

Here at Canister X, the Realm of Heroes and Monsters, there is a certain blogging style, a way of communicating that’s in a constant state of adjustment and fine-tuning but one that has a core that has been in place long enough that you know what to expect from me. If I segue into experimental blogging styles, I hope you come along for the ride. Or I might start a new blog where I can fiddle with blogging conventions until I find a method I like and is an honest expression of myself. Time will tell.

In the end, it does indeed dismay me that blogs are often started as business ventures versus public journals. I get the reasoning behind it, but it doesn’t sit right and that’s probably because it replaces a person with a commodity and, in the end, it’s our replacement of people for commodities that caused the world to be in the state it is currently in.
