Canister X Mailbag – Harvey Pekar’s “Not the Israel My Parents Promised Me” and
“On the Fly” Unboxing – 01112024
I’ve been a fan of Harvey Pekar ever since I watched AMERICAN SPLENDOR all those years ago. It’s my comfort movie for a lot of reasons, one of which is simply the ability to relate to Harvey and his battle through life. He wrote comics about the everyday stuff. And they were good. I have quite a few graphic novels of his outside of AMERICAN SPLENDOR and Harvey always delivers.
You need to check him out, especially if you’re big into comics. It’s mandatory reading.

As you might have guessed–because I’ve been blatantly obvious–I spent a good chunk of 2023 beefing up my YouTube channel in an effort to 1) Play in another medium 2) Put some eyeballs on my books and comics 3) Entertain or inform you as best as I am able.
We did not bad and had growing stats week by week. Sure, there were some dips in the analytics but you can’t hit the ball out of the park every time.
Below is a newly-curated list of my playlists on YouTube. It’d be really great if you subscribed to one that strikes your fancy. Part of the goal with this whole YouTube thing is to use it as a funding channel–which costs my viewers nothing other than 2 seconds to click subscribe–so I can more easily bring you more books and comics and other entertainment. If you haven’t already subscribed to the channel, please do so. It really does help out an independent creator like me make ends meet.
Here are the playlists on my channel in no particular order as we embark into 2024.
Enjoy!

vLog – The Lord of the Rings vs The Dark Tower (Hollywood, Listen Up!)
On this day of Festivus, my head wandered into Stephen King territory and I started thinking about how a proper adaption of THE DARK TOWER series has not yet been done. There’s been talks for years but, ultimately, fans have never received the entire series in film. In this video I compare THE LORD OF THE RINGS to THE DARK TOWER in terms of an opinionated approach as to how to tackle such an immense project. It all comes down to one word . . . which you’ll have to watch to find out. (I’m the worst, I know.)
Ultimately, however, I do think we owe Stephen King some gratitude after all he’s done for the literary world and pop culture in general.

Canister X Mailbag – Zack Snyder’s Justice League – Breast Cancer AwarenessSuperman Funko Unboxing
Ever since I heard the FULL JUSTICE LEAGUE movie was going to be on HBO Max, I had to get in on it because I wanted to see what Zack Snyder originally intended for our DC heroes. Man, was it worth getting a temp subscription for it. Now I own it.
PSA: Breast Cancer Awareness Superman Funko Pop! It’s a cause near to my heart so I kindly ask you to donate to its research when or where able. Cancer on its own is a beast and needs to be defeated. Realm of Heroes and Monsters YouTube Playlist Curation
As my YouTube channel begins to grow, at this present stage I’ve come to a point where I had to adjust my playlists to keep things more ogranized for those who view and/or follow playlists.
There are the news ones I created and organized. I have plans to tweak and adjust some more, but this is my start:
So as you can see, 5 lists were created to better sort the channel which makes for easier navigation.
Feel free to explore the above and don’t forget to subscribe to the Realm of Heroes and Monsters on YouTube. Helps keep the book and comic machine going.
Fido (2006) Written by Robert Chomiak, Andrew Currie and Dennis Heaton Directed by Andrew Currie Runtime 93 min. 5 out of 5
Every so often a movie comes along in a particular genre and does things “outside the norm.”
Fido is such a movie.
Yes, it’s about zombies. Yes, it’s about gut-munching. Yes, it’s about survival in a post-apocalyptic world.
But that’s where the similarities end compared to other end-of-the-world zombie flicks.
This movie is more like a cross between Pleasantville and Night of the Living Dead, with a little bit of humor thrown in there as well.
After a zombie epidemic took over most of the world, a lone scientist invented a collar to control the undead and, through the ventures of the company Zomcom, was able to transform these mindless and hungry monsters into humanity’s slaves, turning them into butlers, house aids and gardeners.
Enter the Robinson family, the only family in the ’50s without a zombie. However, things change when the people-pleasing mom, Helen Robinson (Carrie-Anne Moss), gets Fido, a lovable zombie with life and warmth.
Fido quickly becomes best friends with Timmy, Helen’s son, but one day when the collar goes on the fritz and Fido eats the neighbor, everything changes, a cover-up ensues and it’s up to the Robinson family to hide Fido from those who would want to take him away and kill him (which is something that Daddy Robinson would love to see).
This isn’t your standard zombie movie. Far from it. It has heart, and though a comedy, it’s not slapstick or silly. Just regular funny moments. Billy Connolly as Fido is charming, lovable, fun. You genuinely care for the poor dead guy. You smile with joy when he’s happy. Your heart goes out to him when he’s sad. You even side with him when he gets mad and takes out his uncontrollable hunger on unsuspecting victims.
The story is original. The dialogue is great. The cast couldn’t be better.
New spins on genres are something I’ve always been into. Though classic takes on things have their place, every time something new comes along it’s like a breath of fresh air and Fido is definitely that.
Even hardcore zombie lovers who need a dose of shambling, rotting corpses and loads of blood will enjoy this film as there are “classic zombie moments” in it as well.
This DVD also contains director Andrew Currie’s extremely poignant short film, Night of the Living, about the cause-and-effect of alcohol in the family but with a zombie twist.
