    Vortex Books and Comics

    vortex books and comics logo

All right, folks, listen up. I’m late to the party but horror authors Brian Keene and Mary SanGiovanni opened up a comic and book store in Columbia, PA called Vortex Books and Comics.

If you’re in the area, head down and support a couple of writers displaying their passion for the written word through sharing books and comics with others.

Brian has been a long-standing figure in the field and has won numerous awards. Mary is also a prolific author with several books under her belt. I know that this store effort is going to be one fueled with passion and opportunity to reach readers in a way that perhaps they might not have been reached before. Better, it’s an independent author-friendly store with little-known quality titles awaiting discovery.

I’m really excited to see where this bookstore endeavor goes, and Brian’s no dummy. I trust his business sense to make the store a success. And besides, I’m pretty sure Mary will keep him in check should he smoke too many cigars and starts talking about how he just met The Defenders.

Authortube (Artisttube): How to Overcome Artist’s Block

vLog authortube booktube artisttube how to overcome artists block thumbnail

Two videos were created before this one, the intent being this video the final installment in that trilogy.

    The videos were:

How to Get Past the Writing Wall | How to Overcome the Writer’s Block

What to Do When Stuck on a Drawing

Now, though this video is labeled as an Artisttube one, the principle is for artists of any craft. How do you overcome artistic block in today’s flooded publishing climate? Watch and find out. Clue: The solution is one word and starts with a F.

Hope you’re encouraged by what you hear.

    Peace.

vLog authortube booktube artisttube what to do when stuck on a drawing thumbnail

It happens. You have the vision, you begin to draw, all goes smooth, the picture is turning out perfectly . . . then you hit a snag and can’t draw that arm. Every effort yields something less than desirable. Frustration sets in and you’re not sure if you should continue with the drawing or not.

Here’s what to do so you can finish your work.

    Coming Soon? (Really?)

    coming soon

Why is it always coming soon at the blog? Why are there always announcements about this coming and that coming?

    When are they coming?

Okay, you win. Yes, there have been a lot of “Coming Soon” posts recently on this blog. They are not empty promises. They’re to tell you so you know what’s coming down the pike.

And I can assure you, these “Coming Soons” are all in process, meaning it’s not just a creator saying they’ll do this or that, but I’m actually doing it.

    Example:

    Podcast – Check and released.

New Axiom-man book (SCARLET SYNERGY) – Check and released.

Last year, ZOMTROPOLIS – Check and released.

Axiom-man Merch – Check and released with more to coming.

Patreon 2.0 – Check and released.

    And so on.

I’m a one-man show. Things take time, but they do get done you do get to get them.

    Peace.

Posted on April 16, 2024 5:00 am by A.P. Fuchs

Collecting 101: How I Afford my Toy Collection Part 2

Canister X Mailbag - Super Powers Flashpoint Batman and Tim Drake Robin Unboxing - 01122024 thumbnail

This is a continuation of the original article, which you can read here.

Talk to any serious collector and we’ll all admit to having an addiction to the hobby, and the problem is, like any addiction, you can start to run up the tab real quick.

Here are some more ways to avoid that:

    5) Cash-back credit cards. Most credit card companies offer cash-back cards, with 1-4% cash back, depending on what you buy and where you buy it. Grab a discounted collectible with it and you automatically save a bit just by using your card.

    6) Find reliable discount/coupon finders for your Web browser. I use Honey and it’s saved me a bundle. Plus, Cash back. You can take a look here for info on it.

    7) Collector’s can be impulse buyers, and while this is great for snagging a last-second deal, the impulsive buy could also drain your wallet. If the item can wait, keep it in your shopping cart. Often, online vendors put stuff on sale and it’s happened to me several times where items in my cart are suddenly discounted.

    8) Shop local and check the clearance aisle. Like comic book writer Harvey Pekar once said regarding rummaging around at garage sales for jazz records, “Most of the time it’s a waste of time but every once in a while . . .” And some collectors out there, myself included, know the glorious feeling of finding something cool on the clearance shelf for next to (relatively) nothing.

    9) Dollar stores. They basically clear out what the chains couldn’t/can’t. Example: my Marvel Legends Retro action figure collection (which I’ll do a full showcase of on YouTube at some point) was all Dollarama. $5 a figure. Know what retail wanted? $21+ a figure. For what I have, I saved around $175 or so. I don’t have the whole set but most of them.

I hope the above gave you some more ideas on how to save while still collecting in whatever hobby. Maybe there’ll be a part three to this series if I think of something new? After all, there is more than one way to afford a toy collection.

    Cheers.
