Leading independent horror, zombie mash up and superhero fiction publisher, Coscom Entertainment (www.coscomentertainment.com) has signed a Management and Production Deal with Hughes Capital Entertainment and newly formed, Management Period. The focus of the relationship is to integrate the Canadian-based Publishing company into mainstream entertainment via motion picture, interactive/videogame, and television mediums. Some of Coscom’s flagship titles such as The War of the Worlds Plus Blood, Guts and Zombies by H.G Wells and Eric S. Brown and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Zombie Jim by Mark Twain and W. Bill Czolgosz are coming out under Simon and Schuster’s Gallery Books imprint later this fall. Standout titles like Alice in Zombieland and World War of the Dead will be the immediate focus of the HCE development team.

Hughes Capital Entertainment is currently negotiating a DVD deal for some of the titles, developing some as larger features, and focusing on top seller Zombie Fight Night as the break out video game title. “What’s better than playing a first person fighter where zombies, werewolves, vampires, samurai, kick boxers, robots, and superheroes like Axiom-man all battle it out to the death?” says HCE President/Producer Patrick Hughes.

Coscom joins HCE and Management Period’s already impressive talent and corporate list of clients which includes best-selling authors, top screenwriters, show creators, top musicians, and directors.

    Canister X Newsletter Vol. 1 No. 5

    August 2010

Work is progressing very swiftly on Possession of the Dead (Undead World Trilogy, Book 2) and I’m well past the 50,000-word mark. If I keep up my present momentum, I hope to have it done before the week is out. Present per-day goal for word count is 4,000. It’s got to get done and please don’t think just because I’m pounding it out means I’m not taking my time with it. It’s just how I write. I blast all the words out onto the screen first, then I go back edit/delete/tweak/etc. It’s a cool story, picks up right where the previous one left one, and sets things up nicely for the third installment.

Why the big rush? Simple: Central Canada Comic Con. This year will be my fourth year going as a vendor and I move a solid amount of product when I’m there, and folks last year were asking for Blood of the Dead’s sequel so I assured them it would be out 2010, no later. I’ll be officially launching Possession of the Dead at the con, but odds are it’ll be out online before then, probably mid-October or so. Just watch www.CanisterX.com for an announcement.

    ____________________________________

Earlier this year I also teased about changing my online presence and having more stuff for you, the reader. This is still true and things will be changing at www.CanisterX.com before Possession of the Dead is released. In fact, one of the changes will be part of celebrating the book’s release.

    ____________________________________

On the above, times are changing for the working writer and for publishers everywhere. 2009 was kind of the last year for the old way of doing things. The publishing business is changing daily and lots of publishers are going out of business. We’re living in an increasingly media-centric society and, unfortunately, the old days of paper and ink are fading fast. However, that does not mean books or comics are fading. Just means we need to change our plan, really invest in the e-arena and bring you solid entertainment that way.

    ____________________________________

In comic news, I’m 11 pages into my autobiographical comic, Canister X, named after my website. This autobio comic is nothing like what I’ve seen so far that’s out there—not that I’ve read every autobio comic; I’ve read some and read of many—and I think my use of blending real life with fantasy is quite unique. We’ll see. I hope to have this comic out by comic con as well.

    Kick-Ass (2010)
    Review by A.P. Fuchs

    4.5 out of 5

Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), comic book geek and nobody-at-large, always wondered why no one stepped up and became a superhero. People aspire to be doctors and firemen and policemen, so why not also want to be someone else who helped his fellow man?

After ordering a green and yellow wetsuit off the Internet, Dave dons the outfit and hits the streets as Kick-Ass, a superhero without powers, training or even a proper motivation to fight crime other than “what if?” The first few weeks are uneventful, and after his first attempt at stopping a car robbery nearly kills him, Dave returns more determined than ever to rid the streets of crime. Soon, after stopping the mugging of a fellow from a gang, Kick-Ass is all over the Internet and soon becomes a citywide celebrity.

Little does he realize he’s not alone. Enter Big Daddy (Nicholas Cage) and Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz), a father-daughter team of real-deal vigilantes with a thirst for blood and matching guns to boot. Their mission? Take out the D’Amico crime family, their leader, Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong), having been personally involved with Big Daddy long ago and robbing him of the one he loved.

Soon Kick-Ass, Big Daddy, Hit Girl and newcomer Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) are locked in a war that, hopefully, only the good guys survive.

It’s guns, action, comic books and bubble gum in this adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s graphic novel.

This movie is crazy. A good crazy. A special kind of crazy. I knew from the previews I was in for a different kind of superhero flick and, man, that was what I got. This was fresh, exciting, fun and new. Most superhero movies stick to a formula (origin of the good guy then the bad guy, a few tussles along the way leading to a big fight in the end, the stuff in between usually dramatic bits starring the hero in his personal life). With Kick-Ass, though there were those basic elements to it, the one thing that was really hammered home over and over again was the idea that, yeah, Kick-Ass was functioning in the real world. One with guns, knives, average fighting skills and no body armor. Some folks might think the violence in this film was overdone. Personally—despite a few exceptions—I didn’t think so. You try doing the superhero thing in real life in a place like New York and see what happens.

I also really liked how they dragged that fantasy of being a superhero into our reality and proved, really, that it wouldn’t work. Kick-Ass went up against real bad guys. Ones without mercy. Without care. They’d kill their own mothers if they had to.

The lack of a costumed supervillain also helped this movie and ensured the focus was kept on the good guys. I particularly liked Big Daddy’s and Hit Girl’s origin. It was simple, yet bittersweet and, if anything, really showed that despite being off his rocker, Big Daddy really loved his little girl and only wanted the best for her.

In terms of the non-costumed scenes, Dave Lizewski’s real life was extremely relatable (especially for this comic book nerd) and his high school years and mine seemed to have a lot in common. Except for the girlfriend part. I wasn’t cool enough to have one of those.

This movie was fantastic start to finish. The writing, the action, the realism—true cool.
My only thing was the profanity. I don’t live in New York, but that was a lot of swearing and if people really talk like that in NYC, man, I feel sorry from them. (But, hey, I’m just a Maple Syrup-guzzling Canadian so what do I know?) If they don’t, perhaps the writers can pull back a bit on the wagging tongue for the next one.

    Looking forward to the sequel.

  • Smallville Season 10 Trailer as Seen at San Diego Comic Con

In keeping up with posting trailers this week, I saw a crummy version of this on the weekend, one which recapped each season of Smallville then showed a teaser for the tenth and final season of the show. Then my good friend Doug passed me a link today with the Season 10 teaser in higher res. It’s still a “live” recording, but way, way better than what I saw. And now I want to share it with you as Smallville is one of my favorite shows. I’ve seen every episode every week without fail except for, like, 2 of them, ever since the show aired back in 2001. I did miss the first few of Season 2 and had to watch them online due to my folks at the time not having the right station when the show changed channels and times.

    Anyway, rambling.

Here it is, Smallville Season 10 the teaser from San Diego Comic Con.

I’m a fan of the original series from the ’60s. When I heard they were doing a feature, I hoped it was the ’60s show just updated for 2011.

Seems I’m getting a healthy dose of camp instead.

However, I’m willing to give that the benefit of the doubt because since this is a Seth Rogen film, perhaps the studio strung together all the funny bits just so they could market it as a Seth Rogen film.

Then again, maybe my habit of believing in the best of people will come back and bite me on this one.

Right now I’m waist-deep (no, really, I’m about halfway through it) in Batman: Arkham Asylum on PS3, which is a stunning game and is something I so badly wish they’d use as the story for Batman 3. Yet, of course, the main baddie is the Joker so it’s not going to happen. Still . . .

But coming up real soon is what looks to be another stunning superhero masterpiece and that is Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. In short, the premise is some kind of mystical crystal that keeps all known universes/realities separate has been shattered and as a result, you, the fortunate player, get to select between FOUR Spider-Man styles/game-modes to try and right the wrong from a universe of your choosing.

Only two of the Spider-Man dimensions have been revealed so far: the Amazing Spider-Man (the one we all know and love), plus the ultra-cool Spider-Man Noir, which is Spidey in the ’30s in a Sin City sort of environment.

Below is a couple trailers for the game.

I plan on picking this up the day it comes out.
